Edney Handmade Guitars

The primary goal of my shop is to produce unique and high quality instruments to be enjoyed for generations. The guitars I build are original designs, combining my favorite elements of classic American flat tops with an emphasis on simple aesthetics that strive to inspire the use of the guitar for its highest purpose: channeling creativity and making music. I enjoy using traditional techniques like hot hide glue, varnish-style finishes, dovetail neck joints and hand rubbed sunbursts. I put a great deal of effort into optimizing the voice of each of my guitars, through careful selection and shaping of materials. I use little or no exotic woods in my instruments in order to minimize my impact on sensitive ecosystems. I feel that beautiful and worthy guitars can be made from walnut, cherry, maple and other abundant domestic materials if they are used with intention and skill.

STYLE I

The smallest shape I currently build. Based on early twentieth century parlor guitars, but with a slightly wider and deeper body. Built with hide glue and featuring a dovetail neck joint and modified X-bracing, this is a guitar that tends to shine when fingerpicked or accompanying other acoustic instruments such as banjo, fiddle, or mandolin.

STYLE II

My take on a classic, the Orchestra Model. Perhaps the most versatile shape I build, it lends itself equally well to strumming or fingerpicking. Small enough to be comfortable in almost any hands, but loud enough to hold its own in group settings. I typically employ the same modified X-bracing as my smaller Style I guitars, along with dovetail neck joints and hide glue construction for a traditional voice that covers a wide range of volume and tone.

STYLE III

Everybody loves a Dreadnought, and my personal favorites have always been the slope-shoulder style popularized by iconic models like the J-45. I build my Style III body slightly deeper than normal and use a classic X-brace pattern that results in a powerful, loud guitar that still sounds sweet when picked quietly. My Style III shines in large groups, live settings, or anywhere else a big voice is needed.
